Choosing the right technology

This section is aimed at local authorities and communities looking essentially at developing community energy projects with solar and ground/water source heat pump technologies.

Community energy projects can be split into three different categories:

  1. Medium size systems powering a group of houses/buildings;
  2. Medium size systems for a main building, such as a leisure centre, where the surplus of energy whether it is heat or electricity is exported to the surrounding buildings, and;
  3. Small size systems where a group of households forming a community work together to commission and purchase individual systems hence reducing cost by bulk purchasing and simultaneous installations.

The following pages showcase examples of Community Energy Projects and provide practical information on what needs to be considered for each specific technology.
