Top Awards to Top Green London Organisations
10/06/2010
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, presented a range of awards to the capital's top organisations for saving over 570,000 tonnes of carbon and a combined £70 million from their energy bills.
The second Green500 awards event was held at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and hosted by the London Development Agency on 8 June 2010, and celebrated the achievements in cutting carbon emissions by over 70 large London organisations from sectors as diverse as publishers, hospitals, local government, hotels and commercial landlords. Carbon savings are independently verified through the National Energy Foundation.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "These awards recognise that London's organisations are brimming with the ingenuity and creativity to take on the environmental challenges we face. Not only have these companies collectively made massive strides in becoming more energy efficient and cutting carbon, they are also showing that there are significant financial benefits in doing so."
73 organisations received awards with eight gaining the top level Diamond Award. Addison Lee Plc, which gained the top award last year was joined by seven other organisations in the Diamond category this year: Fujitsu Services, University College Hospital, Eversheds, Canary Wharf Estate, National Magazine Company, Regents College and ExCeL.
Green500 Special Awards are given to distinguish organisations that have made an exemplary achievement in their carbon reduction and the overall winner was judged to be Wiles Greenworld, a specialist provider of office supplies and stationery which had made savings of over 23% in its emissions.
Notes to Editors
The Green500 programme rewards organisations for genuine carbon reductions that contribute directly to the Mayor’s carbon targets. The Green500 has a target to cut London’s emissions by at least one million tonnes. The scheme is set to be expanded later in 2010 to include smaller businesses and organisations and will be delivered by the Carbon Trust.

The National Energy Foundation is an independent charity based in Milton Keynes that works collaboratively with other organisations to promote the better use and sustainable supply of energy. NEF staff have expertise in carbon and energy calculations and verification, and the Foundation is pleased to have worked with the LDA, AEA and other partners on establishing rigorous assessment criteria for the Green500 awards and believe that the Green500 concept could be extended to other local, regional or international award schemes.
