Renewable Energy Installers Training

NEF does not run renewable energy training for installers but is aware of a number of other organisations which do. Listed below is the installer training that NEF is aware of, listed by technology. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and that exclusion from this list does not imply criticism and inclusion does not indicate endorsement. If you run renewable energy training courses for installers and consider you ought to be included on this page, please contact Grace Hyson on 01908 354549.

MCS Made Easy

This one day course aims to assist installers with the MCS Certification process and will help delegates implement an MCS-QMS in their own business. Delegates will be supplied with their own Company MCS Quality Manual and the day will cover the 19 steps required within MCS001.

Although MCS Made Easy does not guarantee passing an MCS accreditation process, it should very significantly reduce the time you require to obtain MCS and also minimise the number of non-conformances your company receives from your Certification Body.

Renewtech

Based in Newhaven, East Sussex, Folkestone and Kent.

Renewtech offer NICEIC accreditation in Solar Thermal, Energy Efficiency, Water Regulations, Unvented Hot Water and Health and Safety.  Shortly Heat Pumps, Underfloor heating an Photovoltaics will be included.

Solar Water Heating

BPEC run a course developed in conjunction with the Solar Trade Association aimed at already qualified or experienced domestic heating engineers and plumbers. The course usually takes approximately 2-3 days to complete including theory, practical and assessment.

There are a number of assessment centres that run the BPEC approved course and they can be found following the web link.

Logic Certification also offer a course in Solar Thermal Domestic Hot Water (although unlike the BPEC course it does not cover roof mounting).  Both the BPEC and the Logic Certification courses can assist in achieving recognition under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) which is required to gain access to Government support initiatives for microgeneration e.g the Low Carbon Buildings Porgramme

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)

BPEC Certification have a training course in Ground Source Heat Pumps running in conjunction with the Renewable Energy Installer Academy in Northern Ireland .  Logic Certification is developing training on GSHP.  The Centre for Alternative Technology runs weekend courses in Ground Source Heat Pumps.   In addition, a number of GSHP companies run training for the installation of their systems (such as EarthEnergy Ltd ; Worcester Bosch and Ice Energy ).

Biomass

HETAS is the official body recognised by government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. In association with the Solid Fuel Association . HETAS operates a registration scheme for heating engineers with special skills in the installation and maintenance of solid fuel heating systems.  A four day HETAS approved solid biomass training course is run by Sure Fire Technical Services.

The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales offer weekend BPEC registered courses on Heating with Wood.

Northwoods, the North East's Woodland Initiative run Ignite training, a three day course aimed at farmers, foresters and arborists with modules on woodfuel systems, woodfuel resource and woodfuel technlogy with additional modules on managing woodlands for fuel, marketing your woodfuel business and woodfuel business management.  The course is accredited by Lantra Awards.

Gerkros offer training on Biomass Heating Systems at their Training Centre in Ireland.

Photovoltaics

City & Guilds with a number of other providers have developed a Certificate in Installing and Testing Domestic PV systems - Vocational (No. 2372). The course is aimed at practicing experienced electricians who either have or are working towards NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, students will ideally have knowledge of the IEE 16th Edition Wiring Regulations and of Test and Inspection. It runs across a number of centres and takes five days.  This course is currently being run by Centre for Alternative Technology.

Wind

Courses in micro-wind are run by Elesca & WM Training for those with and without previous electrical training.  In Northern Ireland the Renewable Energy Installer Academy run courses in mirco-wind and a number of other renewable energy technologies.   City & Guilds are also developing a training course for wind.  Empower Training are planning to deliver this course.   CREST run a five day Wind Power Summer School each year.  In addition, a number of companies run courses specific to the installation of one manufacturer's turbine - for example Scottish and Southern Energy (Swift Wind Turbines); Proven and Iskra .
