NEF runs One Stop MCS a one day course which aims to assist installers with the MCS Certification process.

Delegates are supplied with a fully editable MCS Manual and the day will cover the 19 steps required within MCS001 for Quality Management.

Apart from this course NEF does not run renewable energy training with a focus on installers. We are however, aware of a number of other organisations which do.

Listed below is the installer training that NEF is aware of, listed by technology. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and that exclusion from this list does not imply criticism and inclusion does not indicate endorsement. If you run accredited renewable energy training courses for installers or training on your renewable energy products and consider you ought to be included on this page, please contact Sandra Hayes or 01908 354535.

Solar Water Heating

BPEC run a course developed in conjunction with the Solar Trade Association aimed at already qualified or experienced domestic heating engineers and plumbers. The course usually takes approximately 2-3 days to complete including theory, practical and assessment.

There are a number of assessment centres that run the BPEC approved course and they can be found following the web link.

Logic Certification offer a course in Solar Thermal Domestic Hot Water which was developed in collaboration with NEF and STA. The course is delivered within 2-3 days and includes both a written and practical assessment.

Both the BPEC and the Logic Certification courses can assist in achieving recognition under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) which is required to gain access to Government support initiatives for microgeneration e.g the Renewable Heat Incentive.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)

BPEC has a training course in Ground Source Heat Pumps developed in conjunction with the Ground Source Heat Pump Association and a number of manufacturers .

Logic Certification offer a Heat Pump course that covers both air and ground source and is approved by the GSHPA

NICEIC also run courses on Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal and Solar PV through training centres such as Renewtech.

Biomass

HETAS is the official body recognised by government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. In association with the Solid Fuel Association HETAS operates a registration scheme and training for heating engineers with special skills in the installation and maintenance of solid fuel heating systems.

The Centre for Alternative Technology offers a 5 day course on Biomass: Wood Fuel for Domestic Heating.

Northwoods, the North East's Woodland Initiative run Ignite training, a one day course on firewood production .

Photovoltaics

City & Guilds have develloped 2399-01 City & Guilds level 2 Award in Environmental Technology Systems Awareness;. 2399-11 City & Guilds level 3 Award in the installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems and 2399-12 City & Guilds level 3 Award in the installation and maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems (to replace the Certificate in Installating and Testing Domestic PV Systems 2372). These courses are offered at a number of City & Guilds approved training centres.

Logic Certification offer a 3 day Solar PV course which is accepted by the MCS registration schemes.

Wind

Loughborough University run a five day Wind Power Summer School each year and the Centre for Alternative Technology runs a six day course.  In addition, a number of companies run courses specific to the installation of one manufacturer's turbine - for example: Proven and Iskra.
