This
one day training course will give an overview
of the many ways in which wood fuel can be used
to reduce carbon emissions both in the generation
of heat and in the generation of heat and electricity
(Combined Heat and Power). Topics covered will
include:-
Introduction
- to include the carbon cycle, energy value of
wood, requirements for efficient combustion and
the main types of wood fuel (logs/chips/pellets),
their characteristics, standards etc
Choosing
a wood fuelled boiler - indicator for choice,
technical information on boiler types and maintenance
requirements
Boiler
sizing and system requirements
Fuel
management and storage
Planning
and Regulatory issues
Economics
of wood fuel heating
Large
scale systems - district heating, combined heat
power.

This course is aimed
at building professionals and companies interested
in the potential of wood heating and energy generation
to reduce carbon emission and how it can help
meet renewable energy targets in the context of
planning requirements.
As part
of our CPD programme this course can assist you
in meeting your learning objectives.

: The Trainers
This
training day will be lead by Rob
Gwillim who
has been working in the Renewable
Energy Industry for the past eighteen years. During
his career as an engineer and consultant at the Centre
for Alternative Technology and the National Energy Foundation,
he was involved in projects covering all of the major
renewable technologies.
Since
his first installation of a biomass boiler in 1995 Rob
has been involved in many biomass projects. He has also
acted as a consultant for the Wood Energy Business scheme
in Wales.
Rob
is now Course Leader for the University of East London
masters course in Renewable Energy and the Built Environment
at the Centre for Alternative Technology and Technical
Director for Perpetual Energy Ltd an energy development
company specialising in offering renewable energy solutions
for industry and the building sector.
Rob
will be assisted by Sandra Hayes, a Consultant at The
National Energy Foundation since 2000. During her career
at the National Energy Foundation Sandra has been responsible
for a number of wood fuel projects, the most well known
of which is Log Pile ( www.logpile.co.uk
), a DEFRA funded project that
aimed to promote and aid the use of wood as a source
of renewable energy and sustainable heating. Sandra
is currently responsible for collecting data on wood
and mixed biomass pellet suppliers and manufacturers
in Ireland as part of a European Funded project, Pellets@las
( www.pelletcentre.info
). Other partners in the project are responsible
for collecting data from suppliers and manufacturers
across the rest of Europe.
Sandra
also has experience in delivering training in wood fuel
heating, grants and planning and has spoken at numerous
events on these issues.
